Open RQC colloquium. Lecture 47

The Forty Seventh lecture "TAlgorithmic simulation of far-from-equilibrium dynamics using superconducting quantum computer" in Open RQC Colloquium will be held in National University of Science and Technology MISIS (Moscow, Leninsky Avenue, 4) conference hall № Б-534on 23d of November 2018 at 10:00 a.m by Walter Pogosov, Head of the Laboratory of Physics of Micro- and Nanostructures at Dukhov Research Institute of Automatics (Rosatom State Corporation).


Quantum computers and simulators are prospective for the resolution of problems which are hard to solve using conventional computing systems. Among such problems a modelling of quantum systems, such as molecules, is one of the most important potential applications of quantum machines. In this lecture, the recent achievements in digital quantum simulation of quantum systems will be reviewed. It will be mentioned that quantum computers are prospective for the simulation of the dynamics of spin models far from equilibrium, including nonadiabatic phenomena and quenches. The important advantage of these machines is that they are programmable, so that different spin models can be simulated in the same chip, as well as various initial states can be encoded into it in a controllable way. Walter performs proof-of-principle digital simulations of two spin models, which are the central spin model and the transverse-field Ising model, using 5- and 16-qubit superconducting quantum computers of the IBM Quantum Experience available through the internet via the cloud service. Walter found that these devices are able to reproduce some important consequences of the symmetry of the initial state for the system's subsequent dynamics, such as the excitation blockade. However, lengths of algorithms are currently limited due to quantum gate errors. And there will be a discussion some heuristic methods which can be used to extract valuable information from imperfect experimental data.


Walter Pogosov is currently head of the Laboratory of Physics of Micro- and Nanostructures at Dukhov Research Institute of Automatics (Rosatom State Corporation). He graduated from the Faculty of General and Applied Physics of Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology in 1999 and obtained PhD in theoretical physics from the same Institute in 2002. In his thesis he focused on vortex matter in mesoscopic and unconventional superconductors. After completing his PhD, W. Pogosov conducted a postdoctoral research at the University of Leuven (Belgium) and Okayama University (Japan), where he worked on superconductor/ferromagnet heterostructures and on trapped ultracold gases. He came back to Russia in 2006 and got a position at the Institute for Theoretical and Applied Electrodynamics RAS, but continued a tight collaboration with French and Belgium researchers. During that time, he conducted a research on exactly solvable models in connection to Cooper pairing at nanoscale, on fluctuations in superconducting microstructures, as well as on quantum statistics of excitons. In 2014 W. Pogosov obtained a habilitation degree from Lebedev Physical Institute RAS and moved to Dukhov Research Institute of Automatics. He currently focuses on superconducting quantum circuits for quantum computation and simulation, quantum optics with superconducting qubits, as well as on topological insulator/superconductor heterostructures.
